Cephalonia Mural

This was a two storey public mural created for the Greek community in Melbourne. The design was constricted by the fact that it was for the public domain, representative of the Greek-Cephalonian community in an area that was predominantly not occupied by members of that community.

The concept behind the design was to create a “window into Cephalonia” with the notion that there was a part of the country held within the building. Drawing on surrealism and trompe l’oeil I designed an image of Cephalonia that appeared “beyond” the brick wall of the building.

Dies war ein zweistöckiges, offenes Wandbild, das für den griechisch-cephalonischen Verein in Melbourne entworfen wurde. Die besondere Herausforderung dieses Projektes bestand darin, zum einen den Vorstellungen des Vereins gerecht zu werden und deren Mitglieder mit dem Bild an die cephalonische Heimat zu erinnern. Zum anderen sollte auch vom Rest der überwiegend nicht cephalonischen Gemeinde das Werk als positiv empfunden werden.

Das Thema für diesen Entwurf war ein „Fenster nach Cephalonia“, da der Idee nach in dem Gebäude ein Teil des Landes weiterlebt. Inspiriert vom Surrealismus und tromp l’oeil entwarf ich ein Bild von Cephalonia, das „hinter“ die Backsteinmauer des Gebäudes hinaus erscheint.
